JUNE UPDATE!
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!
This month it has been so exciting to watch all the different NGBs put on different events and celebrate members of the LGTBQ+ community this month! We are excited to continue to showcase role models in sports who show how everyone can get active and be involved. Last month, The Female Sports Forum collaborated with SportingPride for the inaugural LGBTQ Women’s Sports Day in NI. SportingPride’s mission is to encourage the LGBTQIA community to engage in physical activities, and they have been doing fantastic work. If you’re interested in other events, be sure to check out their social media!
To kick off the list of remarkable performances this month, we have Commonwealth Games Silver medallist Kate O’Connor (Dundalk St Gerards AC), who competed in the Heptathlon at the World Combined Events Tour in Ratingen, Germany, on Saturday (17th June) and Sunday (18th June). She finished 4th after a demanding competition, delivering an exceptional high jump performance. We’re excited to see what the rest of the season holds for Kate.
This week marked the beginning of the 2023 European Games, with several athletes from NI participating in Krakow and Matopolska, Poland. We’re thrilled to witness multiple role models competing this year!
The Games got off to a great start with Lauren Roy securing a 3rd place finish in the 100m (11.82), and Ellie McCartney claiming 1st place in the Pole Vault (4.20m). Sommer Lecky achieved 3rd place in the high jump. Team Ireland delivered a remarkable performance, finishing 1st in Division 3 Athletics and earning a promotion to Division 2 for the next games! Erin McConnell made her first appearance at the European Games, finishing in 27th place. As the competition progressed, we witnessed thrilling matches, including Rachael Darragh advancing to the group stage in badminton. Amy Broadhurst reached the quarterfinals, putting up an impressive fight but losing by a split decision. Finally, Michaela Walsh secured her ticket to the 2024 Paris Games! Congratulations to all the incredible women for their hard work and excellent performances!
The TGA All-Ireland LGFA Championship is underway with Armagh playing in group 1. Armagh won their round one match playing against Laois with a final score of 2-8 (Laois) to 3-12(Armagh). They played last weekend against Mayo in round 2. The match finished with a score of 2:10-1:11, and Armagh had the win! Great game and we are excited to watch the next one!
The Glen Dimplex Senior All-Ireland Camogie Championship has also begun, with Down and Antrim participating in groups 1 and 3, respectively. Down played against Clare and Cork, experiencing two losses. They will face Galway on July 1st in their final group stage match. Antrim currently leads their group table, securing a win against Offaly and guaranteeing a game in Croke Park. This marks the first time in 4 decades that they have advanced through the knockout stages. On July 1st, they will face Waterford to determine their opponent in the quarterfinals. Congratulations to Antrim on this remarkable achievement! Waterford v. Antrim 16:30pm at SETU Arena TICKETS AVALIBLE HERE
Throughout this month, numerous women’s events have taken place. The Female Sports Forum ventured to the Titanic Quarter in Belfast to participate in the Almac Women’s 10K. It was a pleasure to witness so many women participating and enjoying physical activity. We are excited to participate again next year! Furthermore, the Women’s Rock Festival was hosted in County Clare over the weekend of the 23rd. It was a fantastic event, and we are delighted to see women engaging in climbing and outdoor activities!
A total of 73 athletes, including a handful of Ulster women, participated in the World Special Olympic Games in Berlin. They achieved remarkable success in basketball (5v5), Bocce, Bowling, Equestrian, Golf, Gymnastics, and Swimming, earning several medals. Additionally, Lee Campbell supported the team as the assistant Head of the delegation. Congratulations to Team Ireland on their impressive performance!
Kyniska Advocacy has launched an athlete support service, providing athlete-led and confidential support to anyone in sports experiencing abuse. They are dedicated to continually improving the sporting environment, and The Female Sports Forum is thrilled to see the existence of such a service. (MORE INFO)
