As we move into 2023, we look forward to this year’s big events. So many people talked about the many accomplishments of 2022, where we found women’s sports pushed to new heights. With moments like the Irish Womens team qualifying for the World Cup or individual performances like Ciara Mageean’s impressive summer runs, we are excited to see what 2023 will hold. 2023 will hopefully be a year where we will be able to watch, stream, and attend more women’s sports than ever before. To get you excited about 2023, the Female Sports Forum has put together a list of 5 events you may want to watch this year!
The Women’s Football World Cup will take place in New Zealand and Australia as they jointly host the 2023 games. The first game kicks off on 20 July. Both the Irish team and the English team have qualified to make this World Cup one to watch. Hopefully, it will continue to push the numbers of girls playing the sport up and up as 2022 saw a 125% increase in England as the Lionesses Euro’s win.
While no date has been set for this fight, there have been hints that Katie Taylor will be fighting in Croke Park this summer. If this event does happen, it will surely be one of the best sporting events on Irish soil all year.
This might be a new event to add to many people’s radars. Dromoland Castle will host the event from the 22nd to the 25th of September. This will be the first time since 2012 that a part of the European Ladies Tour (LET) is hosted on Irish soil. It will be exciting to keep an eye on these professional golfers all year round!
The Women’s Rugby Six nations will take place Saturday, March 25 and Saturday, April 29 after the Men’s Six Nations. TikTok again is sponsoring the event which hopefully will increase viewership across social media and in person. 2022 saw a huge leap in viewership with it being up 64% since 2019. It will be another exciting tournament no matter what the outcome, so tune-in in March!
Hosted this year in Budapest should make an exciting year for athletics. With many incredible runs done in 2022 at the Commonwealth Games and beyond, it will be good to see how many athletes are faring before 2024 and the Paris Olympics. It will be a great time seeing hopefully Ciara Mageean run along with other rising stars. With such a strong showing at the cross-country world championships in December it should be a good year in athletics for Northern Ireland.
If you want to see when other events are on for the year take a look at the Female Sports Forum Events Calendar where we have tried to list all the events for the year. We will keep it updated with new ones or any events we missed. There are so many more events that we are excited about both big and small. The FSF wants people to find a way to stay active and enjoy sports by supporting and playing; we want to show what Northern Ireland Athletes and programs have to offer.
